How It Works

Animal-Centric Design

Everything in V.E.T.S. revolves around individual animals. Each animal becomes a central hub that connects all related information:

The Animal is the Center

  • Identity: Each animal has a unique profile with identification numbers, names, physical characteristics, and registration information
  • Relationships: Connections to owners, herds, locations, sires, dams, and offspring are all maintained
  • History: Complete timeline of every action, evaluation, and event in the animal's life
  • Context: All inventory usage, location changes, and collaborative documentation tie back to the animal

Evaluation Framework

One of V.E.T.S.' most powerful features is the evaluation framework system. This allows you to create structured, repeatable assessments for any purpose:

  • Custom Templates: Define evaluation criteria specific to your needs—veterinary exams, training progression, breeding soundness, performance assessment
  • Consistent Assessment: Every evaluator uses the same criteria, making results comparable across animals and time
  • Trend Analysis: Track how individual animals or groups perform over time on specific metrics
  • Decision Support: Structured data enables better decisions about breeding, treatment, training, or sale

Flexible Action System

Actions in V.E.T.S. go beyond simple event logging. The system uses type-specific tables that allow each category of activity to have its own specialized data structure:

  • Veterinary Procedures: Treatment details, medication doses, diagnoses, follow-up requirements
  • Training Sessions: Skills practiced, duration, trainer notes, progression markers
  • Competitions: Event details, placement, scores, judge comments
  • Husbandry Activities: Feeding, grooming, exercise, environmental changes
  • Action Chains: Link related activities together (e.g., diagnosis ? treatment ? follow-up exam)

Inventory Management

The inventory system goes far beyond simple stock tracking. Items have semantic relationships, multi-language support, kit assemblies, and vendor integration:

  • Semantic Relationships: Items understand how they relate to each other (components, alternatives, complements)
  • Usage Tracking: Every item used is connected to the specific animal and action
  • Kit Assemblies: Create predefined sets of items for common procedures
  • Vendor Management: Track sources, costs, and reorder information

Team Collaboration

V.E.T.S. includes robust collaboration features for teams:

  • Shared Access: Multiple users can work with the same animal data
  • Permission Control: Granular control over who can view, edit, or delete different types of information
  • Change Tracking: Complete audit trail of who changed what and when
  • Documentation: Collaborative note-taking and document management

Architecture Note: V.E.T.S. is built on Microsoft SQL Server with a carefully designed relational schema. This architecture ensures data integrity, enables complex queries, and scales from small operations to enterprise deployments.
